Zac Flasch
Librettist

Biography

The music of American composer Zac Flasch (b. 1999) is multifaceted, encompassing a wide range of musical and aesthetic approaches that aim to captivate listeners and evoke profound emotional responses. Drawing inspiration from various genres and styles, Zac’s compositions meticulously blend elements of classical, contemporary, and experimental music to create a truly unique sonic experience.

Rooted in a deep appreciation for narrative and ancient thought, his music explores the intersection between traditional modes of thinking associated with the ancient Christian church and contemporary musical ideas. By fusing these seemingly disparate concepts, he strives to delve into the depths of human experience throughout history and shed light on the universal aspects of the human condition.

Zac’s portfolio is diverse, including choral, chamber, solo, and electroacoustic music. His music has been performed by University Ensembles, church choirs, at student recitals, and by contemporary artists and ensembles including Laurent Estoppey, The Galan Trio, and Ensemble CONCEPT/21. In July 2023, a new commission by the Munster High School Choirs will brings Zac’s music abroad, with the European Premiere in the Minoritenkirche, Vienna, and in the Salzburg Dom, in Salzburg, Austria.

Zac spent two summers as a Fellow at the Lutheran Summer Music Academy and Festival, where he sang with the Bach Cantata Choir and served as a section leader for the Festival Concert Choir. In 2022, he led the Festival Concert Choir in two performances of his Dona Nobis Pacem as guest conductor.

Zac holds a Bachelor’s of Music Degree in Composition summa cum laude from Valparaiso University, where he studied composition with Navid Bargrizan and David Clay Mettens and conducting with Christopher Cock and Diego Piedra. He is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Composition at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio.
